Registration for the biennial Singapore Chinese Music Competition (SCMC) 2022 will commence on 18 April 2022, with new categories Ensemble A (for 18 years & below) and Ensemble B (no age-limit). This second edition of SCMC seeks to provide an excellent platform to develop the performing skills of young musicians, raise musical standards, discover new talents, and to connect our people by supporting their lifelong interest in pursuit of Chinese music in Singapore.

SCO Executive Director Terence Ho said: “Singapore Chinese Music Competition has always been the cradle to local musicians, grooming talented Chinese orchestral talents and performers. We continue to persevere, to engage and inspire more talented individuals to achieve artistic excellence, and to groom the next generation of Chinese orchestral musicians. We hope to sustain and grow the Chinese music eco system.”

The biennial Chinese music competition returns this year with added categories and there is no age limit. Selected prize winners will stand get a chance to perform with the SCO. Terence Ho said: “Through this competition, we strive to establish a robust ecosystem to groom and nurture the next generation of fine musicians. Singapore Chinese Music Competition 2020 received overwhelming response, attracted 335 Chinese and non-Chinese participants from all walks of life, aged between 7 to 34 years old. Participants who are doctors, engineers, executives, teachers and students, to name a few, took part in the Solo (Junior, Intermediate, Senior and Grand) and Ensemble categories. We hope to see more CO enthusiasts coming forward this year.”

The Competition consists of Solo and Ensemble. Under the Solo category, there are three age categories for the Dizi / Erhu / Guzheng / Pipa / Sheng/ Suona/ Yangqin / Zhongruan, which are as follow:

• Junior: 12 years and below (born in or after 2010)
• Intermediate: 18 years and below (born in or after 2004)
• Senior: 35 years and below (born in or after 1987)

As per the previous edition, there is no age limit for the Solo Grand category and participant can pick any type of Chinese musical instruments from the Strings, Plucked-strings and Wind sections. (Please refer to website for list of Solo instruments)

Do note that Ensemble A is open to those participants aged 18 years & below and Ensemble B has no age-limit. Each ensemble shall consist of a minimum of 3 to a maximum of 20 members, with any combination of Chinese musical instruments from the same instrument family or type.

Registration opens from 18 April 2022 and closes on 25 July 2022. Participants taking part in the Singapore Chinese Music Competition 2022 and their chaperone/accompanist must be fully vaccinated.

The Singapore Chinese Music Competition is supported by Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth, National Arts Council, Tote Board, Temasek Foundation, and in partnership with Ministry of Education, People’s Association, Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre Singapore Chinese Music Federation and SPH Media Ltd, Chinese Media Group, Lianhe Zaobao.

About Singapore Chinese Music Competition

The Singapore Chinese Music Competition (SCMC) 2022, previously known as National Chinese Music Competition, seeks to provide an excellent platform to develop the performing skills of young musicians, raise musical standards, discover new talents, and to connect our people by supporting their lifelong interest in pursuit of Chinese music in Singapore. About Singapore Chinese Orchestra

Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) is Singapore’s only professional Chinese orchestra.
